The museum was opened on November 29, 1986 during the celebration of the 2500th anniversary of Khujand and works as part of the Department of Humanitarian Studies at the rectorate of Khujand State University. B.G. Gafurov. It is located in the premises of the eastern fortress wall of the Khujand fortress of the 8th-10th centuries, restored in 1999, which was part of the fortification system of the city.
The thick walls of the citadel made of mud bricks were fortified with powerful towers. The modern building of the museum imitates only the appearance of a medieval fortress.
The main part of the collection funds are archaeological collections and finds obtained in the course of work on the territory of Khujand by the North-Tajik archaeological complex expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the TSSR in 1954-1986. The collection fund of the museum has about 1200 items, almost half of them are constantly exhibited.
The exposition of the museum is located in a hall with an area of about 150 square meters. and talks about the history and architectural features of the fortifications of Khujand. The exposition presents the life of the population of the fortress in various eras, starting from the period of its construction in the 6th-5th centuries BC. before the Arab conquest of Central Asia, when the Khujand fortress was considered one of the most impregnable in the region.
Part of the exposition is dedicated to the medieval history of the fortress. It tells about the culture and occupations of the inhabitants of the city, presenting samples of medieval ceramics and utensils, fragments of decorative elements of architectural structures, glassware, tombstones with inscriptions.
Among the masterpieces of the museum collection are the Saka helmet, ceramics of the ancient, Hellenistic and medieval periods. The exposition presents numerous plans and maps of Khujand of various eras.
A small section of the museum's exposition is devoted to the history of the study of Khujand and the participants in archaeological excavations on its territory (A.L. Kun, V.V. Bartold, M.E. Masson), as well as researchers who contributed to the creation of the museum.
The museum organizes regular sightseeing tours for schoolchildren. A visit to the museum is included in the program of city events to celebrate public holidays in Tajikistan.
